Anthony Hernandez

Anthony William Hernandez is a retired firefighter-paramedic with 15 years of service in Southern California. After sustaining an injury on a wildland fire, he and his family made the decision for him to retire. However, the transition brought unexpected mental health and substance abuse challenges. Recognizing the need for professional help, Anthony sought treatment at a first responder co-occurring diagnosis center, where he began his journey to recovery. A year later, he was invited to assist fellow first responders on their own paths to mental wellness and recovery.

Since then, he has obtained multiple certifications and training(s) in mental health and addiction. His advocacy work includes speaking engagements at mental health and substance abuse conferences, as well as educating fire departments and police agencies on mental wellness, coping skills, and sustainable careers in emergency services. Anthony has shared his story and expertise through podcasts, an educational film on firefighter PTSD and trauma, and a PBS documentary.

Today, as a Certified Peer Support Specialist and Operations Manager at Pacific Coast Mental Health, he facilitates group sessions, manages the day to day operations of the site and provides one-on-one meetings with clients to build rapport and help them in their healing. In addition, he independently runs a community support group, further extending his commitment to helping others on their recovery journeys.
